In January 2023, a complaint was filed against or in reference to Libertad Contreras by a customer of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. alleging that purchasing a Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) Ltd investment for which Raymond James and the UN Federal Credit Union failed to conduct adequate due diligence or monitoring of the investment. Per the customer, he/she lost over $400,000 because of Ms. Contreras’s actions. On July 25, 2023, Ms. Contreras settled the claim for $120,000, and some or all of this amount may have been paid by Ms. Contreras’s employer and/or insurance carrier.
In February 2018, Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. terminated Libertad Contreras following summary of the allegations on Form U5: “Ms. Ortiz was under internal investigation related to her attempt to correct an error made related to an offshore trust rate misquote without engaging management. In addition, the Firm was investigating emails sent by Ms. Ortiz solicited the purchase of offshore trusts to multiple clients. A review of the emails suggested that the verbiage used to solicit the offshore trust was not fair and balanced.
