In June 2020, a FINRA arbitration was filed against or in reference to Phil Smelser by a customer of Cambridge Investment Research, Inc. alleging that Mr. Smelser sold unsuitable investments. The client also added Mr. Smelser’s alleged misrepresentation and other sales practice violations. Per the customer, they lost over $600,000 due to Mr. Smelser’s actions. On May 28, 2021, Mr. Smelser settled the claim for $410,000, and some or all of this amount may have been paid by Mr. Smelser’s employer and/or insurance carrier.

In January 2019, a FINRA arbitration was filed against or in reference to Phil Smelser by a customer of Cambridge Investment Research, Inc. alleging that Mr. Smelser recommended unsuitable investments and misrepresented and/or omitted material information. Per the customers, they lost over $100,000 due to Mr. Smelser’s actions. On March 5, 2020, Mr. Smelser settled the claim for $34,000, and some or all of this amount may have been paid by Mr. Smelser’s employer and/or insurance carrier.
