In October 2020, a complaint was filed against or in reference to Ryan Stevens by a customer of American Express Financial Advisors alleging that Mr. Stevens did not advise that she would be giving up lifetime income on an annuity that was surrendered and reinvested into a managed account. On February 11, 2021, Mr. Stevens settled the claim for $4,719, and some or all of this amount may have been paid by Mr. Stevens’s employer and/or insurance carrier.

In February 2006, Comerica Securities Inc. terminated Ryan Stevens for allegedly misrepresenting the nature of variable annuity transactions in order to avoid potential additional supervisory scrutiny of annuity exchanges, and to mask violations of the firm’s policy regarding the sale of variable annuities. Stevens facilitated the improper completion of variable annuity applications in that he indicated that the new annuity was not a replacement, despite the fact that he knew, or should have known, that the new annuity was being purchased using the proceeds from the surrender of another annuity.
